Why you’ll love it
Sauces for steak are so good, especially ones that are as simple to whip up as this horseradish sauce. Apparently England invented the classic combination of steak and horseradish, and it’s a tasty one! Chives give it a mild onion-y pop of freshness.
With both sour cream and mayo, the extra creaminess tempers the slight sharpness of horseradish. That means it won’t smack you over the head, but it’ll still clear your sinuses in the best way possible. This delicious creamy steak sauce is ready in just 10 minutes!
What you’ll need
- Sour cream and mayonnaise – the smooth, creamy base
- Prepared horseradish – you can easily find it in a jar! It has vinegar and salt and sometimes sugar to preserve the horseradish root.
- Chives – these mild onions add a fantastic freshness
- Dijon mustard – one of my favorite flavor enhancers
- Lemon juice – a little acidity balances everything to keep it from being one note
Pro tip
It’s a good idea to start with a bit less horseradish to begin with and then taste and add more if needed! It can be quite sharp.

Substitutions and variations
- You can skip the mayo if needed, but I prefer the silkier texture and flavor the mayo adds!

- It’s amazing with steak (try it with my Best Ribeye or Simple Filet Mignon or even Garlic Butter Steak Bites), prime rib, Baked Potatoes or my Roasted Red Potatoes, or fish like my Pan Seared Salmon.
- For sides, make my Creamed Spinach and Easy Glazed Carrots to round out the meal.
Leftovers and storage
- Store leftover horseradish sauce for up to a week in the fridge in an airtight container like a mason jar.
- I don’t recommend freezing this one due to the creamy components.
