Why you’ll love it

If you’re not on the air fryer train yet, this chicken fajita recipe may be the one to convince you. It’s on the table in just half an hour! The circulated hot air ensures that the chicken comes out juicy, and the flavorful onions and peppers have the tastiest charred bits.

Apart from being super simple to make, these fajitas are a family-friendly way to enjoy the best Mexican-style flavors. The seasoning blend is made with everyday ingredients, and these fajitas are amazing with tortillas and a generous squeeze of lime!

What you’ll need

  • Chicken – we’re using boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • Fajita seasoning – I make a tasty custom blend with chili powder (most are mild), smoked paprika, ground cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, and salt & pepper
  • Bell peppers – I prefer yellow and red here since they’re sweeter
  • Onion – use a sweet onion like Vidalia, Walla Walla, etc.
  • Olive oil – to get everything nice and golden

Pro tip

All air fryers and how thinly you slice everything will vary, so when you’re first making these, keep an eye on the cooking time. You may need to add on a little more time than noted below.

How to make air fryer chicken fajitas

This is an overview with step-by-step photos. Full ingredients & instructions are in the recipe card below.

mixing fajita seasoning in a bowl and tossing with chicken and vegetables

Mix together the spices in a prep bowl. Add the sliced chicken, onion, and peppers to a bowl, then toss well with the olive oil. Sprinkle on half of the seasoning, toss, then add the rest and toss again until coated well.

Substitutions and variations

  • Prefer to use your oven? Try our Sheet Pan Chicken Fajitas instead.
  • To save time, you could use store bought fajita seasoning if you wish.
  • You could swap the chicken breasts for boneless skinless chicken thighs. They may take a little longer to cook.
  • Change up the color of the bell peppers!

What to serve with air fryer fajitas

  • I enjoy chicken fajitas with tortillas, my restaurant-style Guacamole, a big squeeze of fresh lime juice, and plenty of sour cream! These Quick Pickled Red Onions would be good too.
  • You can always skip the tortillas and serve as-is, build a rice bowl, etc.
  • I like to serve any Mexican eats with my Pico de Gallo on the side, and a great salad idea is this Avocado Corn Salad.

Leftovers and storage

  • Store leftover fajitas for 3-4 days in the fridge in a covered container.
  • Reheat in the microwave or a saucepan until heated through. You could also air fry for a few minutes.
  • You may freeze leftovers for up for 3 months. Keep in mind that the vegetables will lose firmness even more, and the chicken may dry out slightly.

Air Fryer Chicken Fajitas

This air fryer chicken fajitas recipe has perfectly seasoned bites of chicken and strips of tender-crisp bell peppers and onions! It's easy, fast, and bursting with exciting flavors.
Prep: 10 minutes
Cook: 15 minutes
Total: 25 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper or to taste
  • 1.5 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper sliced
  • 1 yellow bell pepper sliced
  • 1 medium onion sliced
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • For serving: tortillas, lime wedges, sour cream, guacamole, etc. optional, to taste

Instructions

  • Add the chili powder, smoked paprika, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, and salt & pepper to a small bowl and mix together.
  • Place the sliced chicken breasts and veggies into a large prep bowl and pour the olive oil over top. Toss until the chicken and veggies are nicely coated in the oil. Sprinkle half the spice mixture on top and use your hands to toss, then add the remaining spice mixture and toss again so everything is well coated.
  • Pour the contents of the bowl into your air fryer basket.
  • Cook at 400F (I don't preheat the air fryer) for 15 minutes, using tongs after 10 minutes to turn/toss the chicken and veggies. As all air fryers vary, test a piece of chicken after 15 minutes to ensure it's fully cooked. If needed, pop the basket back in the air fryer for an extra minute or two.
  • Serve as desired with warmed tortillas, sour cream, etc.

Notes

  • Be sure to use mild chili powder if spice is a concern.
  • If you’re not using sea salt or kosher salt, you may want to use less to begin with and add more after tasting it.
